The main motivation when deciding on rhinoplasty is usually dissatisfaction with the own image. Anyone with a good health condition can benefit from this aesthetic surgery. Rhinoplasty can be applied for reasons such as having an arched nose, long nose, low nasal tip, structure and asymmetrical nostrils, and damage as a result of accident and trauma. All of these problems can be resolved, as well as the curvature of the bone that causes breathing problems can be corrected.
The rhinoplasty procedure is generally divided into two, open and closed techniques. Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Open rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia.
An incision is made just below the nostrils. In this way, the surgeon has a wide perspective from which he/she can see the bones, muscles, and cartilage of the nose. The incision continues inwards and reaches the nose pole. This incision will become invisible in the future. With the open technique, every part of the nose can be easily intervened. It takes longer than the closed technique.
In closed rhinoplasty, intervention is performed from the inside without lifting the nose. With the incision made, the nasal cartilages and nasal bones are reached. After the necessary procedures are applied to the bones or cartilages, they are closed with sutures. It is a shorter technique. Compared to open rhinoplasty, closed rhinoplasty offers the surgeon more limited vision.
Full recovery in rhinoplasty is a process that may take some time. It can start from about 5-6 months and last up to 2 years. Hospitalization may be required for 1 day after the operation, the patient is discharged later. The patient should not eat or drink anything for several hours. Resting with the head elevated is good for the pain.
If symptoms such as mild pain or nausea occur, the patient may take medications. From the 3rd day, the patient can slowly return to his/her daily life. It is very important to protect the nose from damage at the beginning of the healing. Swelling around the nose and eyes due to the operation also starts to decrease from the 3rd day. At the end of 1 week, edema decreases visibly. It is necessary to wait a few months for it to completely disappear.
Swelling occurs around the nose and mouth after rhinoplasty. The patient’s smile is affected by this but this situation is not permanent, the swelling decreases over time and the smile returns to normal within a few months.
All interventions performed inside and outside the nose with rhinoplasty are permanent. They do not lose their effect naturally.
Like all other aesthetic procedures, rhinoplasty also carries some risks and some side effects may occur afterward. Anesthesia-related problems, bleeding, and infections may be seen after rhinoplasty.
