DHI Direct Hair Implantation

DHI technique is a high-tech hair transplantation method that is performed by using special implant pens. DHI stands for "Direct hair Implantation".

Since the procedure of DHI does not involve any incision, it has become popular in recent years. The candidate's own hair is taken from the donor area and then placed into the channels in other transplantation methods. In the DHI technique, there is no channel opening process. Only the graft (the structure consisting of skin and hair follicles) is collected and then transplanted.

DHI Technique Procedure

The biggest advantage of the DHI's procedure is that the implants are transplanted by using a special medical pen. Thus, the grooving process and hair transplant are performed at the same time. The duration of the DHI operation varies depending on some factors: How many grafts are used and the size of the area to be transplanted are the main ones.

A DHI operation can take about 5 to 10 hours. Local anesthesia is given during the operation, so the person does not feel any pain. Grafts are taken from the donor area after anesthesia and this step is performed carefully by relaxing the hair follicles.

After this stage, the proper angles for transplantation are determined and the grafts filled in the implant pen are planted into the channels.

Good Candidates for DHI Technique

“Can I be a candidate for hair transplant with DHI?” In order to answer this question, it is necessary to undergo a large-scale examination. At this point, the hair structure and hair features of the candidates are examined. Anyone who has enough hair depth and thickness is also older than 18 years, and does not have any health issues can be a candidate for hair transplantation with DHI.

Preparation and Recovery Process for Hair Transplantation with DHI Technique

Before the hair transplantation with DHI, there are some precautions and conditions that must be followed for the preparation. Although DHI has a small-scale procedure, quitting smoking is a must beforehand, as with almost all other surgical operations. Using blood thinners should be avoided for a while. Jelly or kinds of materials for hair care and appearance should not be used in this period. Chemical-based products should also be avoided, and hair cleaning should be considered on the day of the operation.

The hair follicles are very sensitive to possible impacts. It is very important to protect the transplanted area after the hair transplant operation. There should be no contact between the planting area and the pillow while sleeping. Heavy exercises should be avoided for 1 month following the operation. The doctor may give some advice for protection such as shampoo, etc.

There is no need to shave and it may count as a big distinction. For this reason, it is a method often preferred also by women.
DHI method is generally a low-risk method without many complications. Common side effects are redness and swelling and these are usually not seen again after the first week.
It is possible to be discharged on the same day after the DHI operation. After resting for a few days, it is also possible to return to daily life. Full recovery takes about 2 weeks. Definitive results can only be seen after 1 year.
Direct hair implantation (DHI) is a developed variant of the FUE procedure. After hair follicles are extracted from the donor site using a micromotor or manually, the roots are transferred to the transplantation area. Choi Pen, a specialized medical device, is the greatest unique characteristic of the DHI process compared to other hair transplantation procedures. When having a DHI hair transplant, the surgeon has complete control over the depth of the placement, as well as the direction and angle of each graft.
Both comes their own advantages. In DHI and FUE procedures, specific hair follicles are extracted from the scalp one by one. A surgeon physically creates a series of channels in the scalp to insert hair follicles during FUE. The DHI procedure enables surgeons to simultaneously perform these incisions and transplant hair. With the FUE method, hair can be transplanted to larger areas compared to DHI.
During DHI, your scalp will be numbed with local anaesthetic drugs. You may likely experience moderate pain or discomfort in the transplant area as well as in the donor area. Your surgeon may give painkillers and antibiotics to avoid infection for the following several days.
